We are located in Reagan, Crockett, and Upton counties in the semi-arid Permian Basin region of West Texas. We raise registered Hereford cattle and Quarter Horses in the short grass country of West Texas.  The Coates ranch was established in 1905 by P.H. Coates.  About 20 years after establishing Coates Ranch, Coates’ son-in-law, J.A. Queen, began building a registered Hereford herd, and a Coates family tradition began.

Since the original cowherd was purchased by J.A. Queen in 1927, we have always raised our own replacements, and never purchased another female.  Our herd traces back to Anxiety 4th bloodlines, and in addition to raising our own herd bulls, we have purchased Line One bulls from leading breeders all over the U.S.  Our environment in West Texas predicates that our cattle have to be moderate-framed, easy fleshing, good travelers, and low-maintenance.  For over 80 years, we have selected for pigment, disposition, udder quality, fertility, milking ability, calving ease, longevity, and structure.  Herefords do more with less, as they are naturally efficient converters of grass and grain, so a little feed goes a long way on the range and in the feedlot with Hereford genetics as evidenced by the Circle A Ranch and Harris Ranch Research Projects.  That is why we have used Hereford cattle in semi-arid West Texas for 83 years.  Please give us a call and come out to see what we have to offer.

He is the 3rd son we have used out of 8542, and he is the most complete and  brings everything to the table.  Calving ease, eye pigmentation,  and ribeye as he ratioed 110%.   He is heavily muscled, and passes this on to his calves.

We think think this is the best son out of 215Z, and his first calves look great.  His calving ease is second to none, including Sensation.  Holden has half-sister in the donor pen, so this is a can't miss heifer bull with exceptional spread numbers and great carcass data!

7154 was our choice out of Montana in 2018.  His dam 1023 has a perfect udder and is an elite donor cow.  He is smooth shouldered, big butted, straight topped, deep sided, and well marked. Very moderate in frame.  He is perfect for West Texas.

8542 is turning out to be more than we ever anticipated.  His daughters are great mothers, and his sons are moderate framed, heavily muscled, easy-doers, tons of marbling, and pleasant to be around.  We are keeping 2 sons this year and will have more info on them down the road.

0068 carries as much volume as any bull to step in Reagan County.  His dam is still in production at 11 years of age, and is the ideal West Texas cow.  We have 1 son in use now and another one on the way.

We had the chance to purchase 1044 in the fall of 2013 and are very pleased with the results so far.  He loves West Texas, and his first calves on the ground here look great.

I can't say enough about 1086... he ratioed 126% out of a first calf heifer who is absolutely beautiful.  His dam is coon-eyed with perfect udders.  He is moderate-framed and acts like a herd bull.  His first calves are on the ground and look great.

3013 was our choice out of Montana in 2014.  We think he is one of the most complete sons out of 8050, and his mom is freckle-faced with pigmented udders to boot.  He will be a big part of our program for years to come.
