WE ARE LOCATED in Reagan, Crockett, and Upton counties in the semi-arid Permian Basin region of West Texas. We raise registered Hereford cattle and Quarter Horses in the short grass country of West Texas. The Coates ranch was established in 1905 by P.H. Coates. About 20 years after establishing Coates Ranch, Coates’ son-in-law, J.A. Queen, began building a registered Hereford herd, and a Coates family tradition began.
Since the original cowherd was purchased by J.A. Queen in 1927, we have always raised our own replacements, and never purchased another female. Our herd traces back to Anxiety 4th bloodlines, and in addition to raising our own herd bulls, we have purchased Line One bulls from leading breeders all over the U.S. Our environment in West Texas predicates that our cattle have to be moderate-framed, easy fleshing, good travelers, and low-maintenance. For over 80 years, we have selected for pigment, disposition, udder quality, fertility, milking ability, calving ease, longevity, and structure. Herefords do more with less, as they are naturally efficient converters of grass and grain, so a little feed goes a long way on the range and in the feedlot with Hereford genetics as evidenced by the Circle A Ranch and Harris Ranch Research Projects. That is why we have used Hereford cattle in semi-arid West Texas for 83 years. Please give us a call and come out to see what we have to offer.
